Mediation roles and ecologies within resilience-focused urban living labs

Urban living labs (ULLs) are increasingly exploring resilience and sustainability-related themes. This paper contributes to the gap in the research of ecologies of intermediation in processes of ecological transition through civic resilience. It investigates mediation roles and ecologies in four ULLs : a civic network in Bagneux, Paris, France ; the Urbotecafellowship in Bucharest, Romania ; a learning initiative at Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm, Sweden ; and a civic activation project in Hammarkullen, Gothenburg, Sweden. The research questions address mediation's importance in supporting civic resilience, mediator roles within European living labs, and the mediation types necessary to sustain, scale up or instigate civic resilience. Mediation is understood in the Latourian sense as transformative, a capacity of both humans and non-humans. Mediation ecologies require the connection and creation of relations (when the social field is fragmented), the negotiation and balance of positions (when there are conflicts or oppositions) and catalysis (when collective initiative is missing), but that mediation can also be obstructed.

Generative analogy for a collective action in urban design

La communication a porté sur le recours à l'analogie dans l'entreprise d'action collective dans la fabrique urbaine. À partir de deux études de cas, la notion de scénarisation dans l'Atelier des Places du Grand Paris et celle de jurisprudence pour la Preuve par 7, l'intervention met en exergue les natures distinctes de ces analogies propices à stimuler l'appropriation : en tant que catalyseur de déplacement cognitif ou en tant que nouveau cadre d'enquête.

This international colloquium entitled 'Gender dynamics and practices in architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture' (webinar February 2020) brought together contributions for an assessment of the gains and limits of feminization and gender dynamics at work in the professional worlds of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture in France, fifty years after the 'massive' entry of women into architecture schools in 1968. It allowed for the sharing of data and analyse the modalities, temporalities, and effects of the social and historical process of transformation of gender relations and, more broadly, of power relations (based on race, social class, etc.) with an intersectional perspective.

Ce colloque international, ayant lieu sous forme de webinaire, vise à réunir des contributions pour un bilan des avancées et des limites de la féminisation et des dynamiques de genre à l'œuvre dans les mondes professionnels de l'architecture, de l'urbanisme et du paysage en France, cinquante ans après l'entrée « massive » des femmes dans les écoles d'architecture en 1968. Il invite à scruter, discuter, partager les données et les analyses sur les modalités, les temporalités et les effets de ce processus social et historique de transformation des rapports de genre et, plus largement, des rapports de domination (race, classe sociale, etc.) dans une perspective intersectionnelle.

Data classification in building data projects : an information-based approach to BIM projects in France

Data in BIM projects include information on material characteristics, dimensions, energy simulations, equipment maintenance, occupancy patterns, space functions, etc. In these projects, the process of creating and retrieving building data is crucial for the larger construction project. The detailed review of ongoing BIM projects in France revealed how much the aforementioned process had gained weight, to the point of becoming a complete project in itself, the "building data project". We formulate the hypothesis that building data and their classification are a suitable observatory of the system of actors working on the building construction process and their interests. Through the building data project, a whole set of new concerns are integrated into the modelling process, which was previously mainly focused on formal and functional aspects of the building. We therefore considered data classification and selection as an opportunity to explore emerging interests and requirements in the building design process. Following the analysis of databases related to 12 BIM projects in the design phase, we propose a tool for the classification of building data into multiple categories which reflect the actors' main concerns and interests.

The Architecture Competition : A Beauty Contest or a Learning Opportunity ? The French case in the light of European Experiences

The architecture competition is a high point of interaction between very diverse actors, architecture specialists or not. However, is it really an opportunity for exchange and shared learning ? Based on surveys conducted in France and in several European countries on behalf of the French Ministry of Culture, this contribution aims to identify the conditions that foster the interactions inherent to competitions, the possible scope of these exchanges and the rationale behind them. When the competition is a chosen procedure, it is most often perceived as a moment of generating ideas that opens a professional debate and also addresses the general public. When it is mandatory, the competition is guided by another logic : that of ensuring the fairness and transparency of the joint choice of a project and a service provider as well as the legality of the contract concluded with the latter. Depending on the place given by decision-makers to this legal and contractual dimension, the nature and scope of the debates around the competition vary widely. If the legalistic approach dominates, it tends to limit interactions. However if the contracting authority adopts a more open approach to the competition, from programming to the dissemination and capitalisation of its results, it can make a real process of collective deliberation and favour the growth of shared competence.
