Mayotte
Teaching for the final year project
This final-year project module focuses on the island of Mayotte. It offers an approach that helps students understand how the project functions as a cross-disciplinary endeavour through its analytical and propositional strengths.
Objectives
The final-year project group (PFE) is working on the development of the island of Mayotte through housing, public facilities and urban development projects. The course aims to demonstrate that architectural design is a multidisciplinary field where politics, culture, science and the arts, in short, the whole of social life converge.
Course Structure
Among the objectives, students are required to carry out a multi-criteria assessment, as part of a sustainable development approach at various scales : the territory, the urban fabric, the site and the chosen building. This assessment is technical, social, economic, environmental and sensitive. It focuses particularly on a historical, landscape and architectural analysis in relation to economic and societal issues. The projects also take into account the expectations of local decision-makers. Whilst considering local economic and organisational possibilities, they must be forward-looking in order to propose a dynamic of development and uses suited to the area.
The aim of the project is to establish credibility and quantifiable expertise in the key issues at the heart of sustainable development (resource management, waste management, pollution management, carbon footprint, use of bio-based materials, social impact as a driver of development, etc.). Particular attention is paid to the subject of water through a cross-cutting approach : as a resource, a blue infrastructure, a driver of biodiversity, an economic driver, and a social link…
Students are invited to develop a detailed bioclimatic analysis, at both the urban scale and the scale of the building within its site. They will alternate between team-based work and independent individual projects.
Students will be placed in professional scenarios, where circumstances permit. They will liaise with various public and private stakeholders in the regions, who will outline their expectations, challenges, issues and resources.
